There are many mold removal products on the market, and choosing the right one can be quite a process.  There are various solutions for how to get rid of mold that range from home remedies to toxic chemical products.  Mold is a rather difficult problem to deal with because it is quite persistent, and it can sometimes be quite hard to track down the source of your mold infestation.  It can live within the walls of your home where a pipe might have a small leak or condensation, and this can cause extensive damage, and can also present a health risk. This is why identifying and eliminating the mold quickly and efficiently is of utmost importance.

The most prevalent type of mold found in damp or water damaged homes is black mold. This is the type of mold that can cause health risks, as well as causing irreparable damage if not dealt with quickly.

The goal of mold remediation is to remove and rehabilitate any areas that have been affected by mold. You can't simply use a fungicide to kill the black mold, because its bi-products may still be left behind. You can use any detergent or cleaning product to remove mold, but specific mold and mildew removal products combine the cleaning action of detergent with an anti-fungal solution in order to both kill and remove any trace of the mold. It is also not sufficient to just expose the area to dry air and sunlight, as some believe. This will just cause the mold to go into a dormant state during which its spores can still spread. Any contact with moisture in the future will cause another very sudden outbreak of mold in areas where you thought the mold had been wiped out. This is why complete removal is necessary.

When choosing a mold removal product, be sure to take into account the environment where you'll be using it. If you are removing mold in your home where children or pets are going to be playing, then you can find safe and even "green" solutions that will do a fine job of removing your mold problems. If you are working on rehabilitating uninhabited dwellings, you can consider more industrial strength removers, though this might be a bit of overkill, as the safe products usually do a good enough job in most cases.

Some people believe that bleach will kill and remove mold. This is only partially true and will only work on non-porous surfaces. On porous surfaces, like wood, it makes the mold essentially disappear as far as you're concerned, which makes it tougher to actually kill and remove. This is why you have to ensure that you're using a proper mold removal product - they truly have biocide and cleaning properties to both kill and remove the mold. You will also may want to use these products another time or two in the future to prevent potential outbreaks from spores you might have missed.

Caution should be taken when removing mold.  It can be toxic to humans, so masks and gloves should be worn during mold removal.  Precautions should also be taken to prevent spores from spreading to unaffected areas of the home or building.  Once again, these spores will spread undetected until a certain moisture level in the air is reached, and all of the sudden you have a mold problem in parts of the building you thought had been completely unaffected.

If the problem is severe enough, you might need to consult and hire a professional mold remediation service. However, if you feel the problem is small, then combining fast action with the right mold remover products should held stave off the spread. Remember to locate the source of the moisture first, before you begin the black mold removal process. If the problem is humid air in general, then a dehumidifier and ventilation will be necessary. Also keep in mind that killing the mold is not enough; all traces of the mold must be removed, and this is where your mold removal products come in.

I will usually spray down the infected area with white vinegar water to prevent the mold from becoming airborne. Then scrub off the mold with a mixture of Borax and white vinegar.
