Headset Walkie Talkies

By

Headset walkie talkies are a version of two-way radio that incorporates a waist-mounted radio unit with a headset much in the same way that a cell phone would. The most common form of walkie talkie headsets are the wired version, though wireless sets are available. Much like cell phones, walkie talkies use Bluetooth to communicate wirelessly between the radio unit and the headset. These radios vary in quality from children's toys that you can purchase for a couple of bucks and do a fine job of communicating from one kid's yard to the next, to commercial units that can be used in a several mile radius as long as there aren't many obstructions.

Some of them are built to be incredibly tough so they can withstand the elements, as well as long falls which is a frequent occurrence in places like construction sites where two-way radio communications are often used.

Walkie talkies have been around in some form or another since World War II. Back then, any radio that was man-portable might be considered a "walkie talkie" and the term, according to Wikipedia, was coined by Alfred J. Gross in the early 1940's. Since then, advances in technology have allowed these radios to continue to get smaller and smaller while having the ability to incorporate different accessories and features. One such feature is the headset. The headset makes the walkie talkie a bit more convenient to use, and adds a bit of privacy over the conventional speaker the radio.

Walkie Talkie Headsets

There are a few different type of headsets available for your walkie talkie.  There are, of course, the traditional wired headsets.  These will look very much like those that come with a cell phone, attach to the walkie talkie via a wire, and incorporate a boom mic microphone with either an around-the-ear, or over-the-head earpiece.  This type requires you to push the PTT switch on the transmitter/receiver, or it might have a PTT switch somewhere along the wire attaching the headset.

You can also find VOX style headsets that include a voice activated component, which eliminates the need to push the PTT button.  These will usually come in the boom mic configuration as well, but you can also find neck or voice-box mounted versions as well.

The latest in technology are the wireless headset walkie talkies.  These use Bluetooth to incorporate the headset and the radio, the same way your cell phone does.  This is the easiest to deal with, most convenient, and most comfortable version of walkie talkie headset.

Contemporary uses of these two-way radios almost require that you use walkie talkies with headset.  They are often used in active settings, like a construction site, military operations, hunting, and various outdoor sports.  Many of these activities require that you have your hands-free.  This makes headset walkie talkies an ideal solution for your two-way communication needs.
